Writing your wedding vows.

The task is straightforward enough and pressing to complete before your ceremony. (Trust us, you don’t want to wing it.) So, what’s stopping you from writing wedding vows? Other than feeling possibly intimidated , overwhelmed and completely unsure of where to start…

Sure, in reality, all that stands between you and writing wedding vows is a blank sheet of paper. Only, turning that empty space into words that genuinely reflect your love and commitment isn’t exactly as simple as checking “taste wedding cake flavors” off the pre-wedding checklist. That said, we truly believe that each and every one of us is able to write wedding vows — and that’s where we come in.

We created The Art of Etiquette 10-Day Vow Writing Challenge to help you get focused, overcome barriers and produce unique vows that are perfect for your big day.

This guide isn’t going to give you a one-size-fits-all script. Rather, you can use this self-guided challenge to find direction, thoughtful prompts and suggestions for navigating common vow-writing obstacles. You’re the one who knows what’s in your heart. This challenge will help you put that on paper.

Throughout the 10 days, you will learn…

  • How to establish the tone and goals for your wedding vows: Do you want the vows to be sentimental and romantic? Or funny and playful? Are there any unique elements you want to incorporate, such as a note to new step-children?

  • What icebreaker questions can get your creative juices flowing: Whether you want to incorporate the answers is up to you, but these questions are a great way to get you in the right frame of mind for your vows.

  • How to outline and compose a first draft: Messy first drafts exist for a reason! We’ll guide you through getting those words down on paper.

  • What steps to take during the revision process: We believe that taking a breather is an important step in the process. With more clarity, you can return to your first draft to make it an improved new version.

  • How to complete and refine your vows: From getting some thoughtful feedback from a trusted friend to polishing off your vows, we’ll show you how to confidently complete the vows.

  • Plus bonus tips for rehearsing and using your vows!

For best results, we suggest beginning the challenge one to two months before your
wedding day.

Better yet, schedule a period of time to do the challenge alongside your partner. Although whether you want to share the vows with each other before the big day is up to you, it is helpful to keep each other motivated and encouraged as you work through the challenge.

One note about the word “challenge”: Yes, this process may test you in some new ways. After all, most of us don’t have extensive experience writing wedding vows before the pressure is really on! However, we also believe there is enjoyment and meaning to be found in the process itself. So much of planning a wedding can revolve around logistics and little details. Writing vows, in contrast, is a way to bring your mindset back to what really matters: your love and the marriage to come.
